When installing a French drain yourself, or hiring a contractor, its important to follow these two simple rules to achieve good water flow and infiltration. Be sure to maintain proper slope of 1% throughout your landscape drainage system. Proper slope will allow the French drain to quickly drain and remove water from the area that needs to be drained. Soil on site will help determine best French drain installation practices for your landscape drainage project. To ensure good water movement into the drainage system make sure to remove heavy clay soils and backfill the French drain with a more permeable backfill - such as filtered top soil, sand, or washed gravel. Use a small sledgehammer and brick-set chisel to chop out any rocks along the edge of the just-cut driveway. 5. Dig a 6-inch-deep trench along the end of the driveway. Shovel the excavated dirt into a wheelbarrow. 6. Glue an offset outlet and a 90-degree elbow onto one end of the channel drain. 7. Glue a short section of 4-inch-diameter plastic pipe and a 45-degree elbow onto the 90-degree elbow. 8. Glue an end cap onto the opposite end of the channel drain. 9. Mix up a bag of concrete in the wheelbarrow. 10. Fill the trench with wet concrete. Smooth the concrete with a pointed brick trowel. 11. Press the channel drain down into the concrete, then check it with a level to ensure it's sloping slightly toward the drainpipe. Tap down the drain with a rubber mallet. 12. Use the trowel to spread an angled wedge of concrete against the back of the drain. 13. Dig a 12-inch-deep trench out from the channel drain and across the yard. 14. Use a reciprocating saw to cut plastic pipe to extend from the drain along the trench. Glue the pipe and fittings together. 15. Check the drainpipe with a level to make sure it's pitched down and away from the driveway. 16. Backfill the trench with soil to conceal the drainpipe. 17. Line the end of the drainpipe with flat stones to deter erosion. 18. Sprinkle some asphalt cold patch between the channel drain and the driveway. 19. Compact the patch with the small sledgehammer, then add more asphalt and compact it again. Repeat until the patch is flush with the surface of the driveway. 20. Plant grass seed along the backfilled trench. Click here to SUBSCRIBE to the official This Old House YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=thisoldhouse Steps for How to Install a Basement Bathroom: 1. Lay out the 2x4 bottom wall plates to establish the perimeter of the bathroom walls. 2. Measure off the wall plates to locate the center of the shower drain and toilet flange. 3. Dig a trench extending from the existing drainpipe over to the new locations of the shower drain and toilet flange. 4. Use a right-angle grinder fitted with a diamond-impregnated cutting wheel to cut through the old cast-iron drainpipe. 5. Attach a flexible no-hub mechanical coupling onto the end of the just-cut drainpipe. Tighten hose clamp onto the cast-iron pipe with a torque wrench. 6. Cut and glue together 3-inch-diameter PVC pipes and fittings to form the drainpipe assembly that connects the old cast-iron pipe to the new shower and toilet drain. 7. Slip the end of the PVC drainpipe assembly into the mechanical coupling attached to the old cast-iron pipe. Tighten the hose clamp to secure the PVC pipe. 8. Next, run 2-inch-diameter PVC pipe from the drainpipe assembly over to the shower and vanity sink. 9. Install traps for each fixture, and be sure the pipes slope 1/8 inch per foot to drain properly. 10. Drive a 1/2-inch-diameter steel-reinforcing bar down into the soil beside each trap. Then, use duct tape to secure the bars to the traps. 11. Have the rough piping inspected before pouring the concrete floor. 12. Cover the open end of the toilet pipe with a foam cap. Wrap plastic around the shower-drain pipe. 13. Have the concrete contractor pour a new floor around the piping. Channel drain around the pool serves to collect rain water and protect your home. When this small channel drain goes bad, it can sometimes be cleaned, but most of the time the problem is the DISCHARGE of the drain is bad or missing. This is the most common problem in southern homes. From Florida to Texas, even up into the southern states. Problems like pool liner bubbles or pulls away from wall, cracked concrete, or the most common problem is water finds its way into the back wall of the house and does damage to hardwood floors, causing them to warp or buckle, baseboard get wet, wet sheet rock, and wet walls, and in some cases, so much pressure builds under the floor it causes the floor itself to buckle. The solution is proper discharge of the channel drain, whether it be gravity or by sump pump. We use NDS drainage products for all our storm water management systems. http://www.ndspro.com/ http://www.bellislawns.com/

NDS Spee-D and Mini channels help to collect surface water and direct it away from your home and landscape. For more information on NDS SpeeD and Mini channels or other products, please visit our website at http://ndspro.com/channel-and-trench-drains Today were going to show you how to install the NDS Spee-D channel drain. A channel drain is an effective way to collect and direct surface water away from your home or property. Channel drains collect water over a large area making them the perfect solution for water running off of your driveway, sidewalk, pool deck or patio. Let’s get started. In this particular residence, the homeowner wanted to prevent water from running off of the driveway and into the garage. A channel drain will be used to capture the water and direct it away from the house. The channel drain funnels water through pipes and eventually moves the water to a safe distance from the house. NDS Spee-D channel drains are available in 4 foot and 10 foot lengths to easily adapt to any job. Each channel has available accessories that easily connect to a variety of pipe types and sizes, such as end outlets, bottom outlets, 90s and tees. This flexibility allows you to easily create a customized drainage system for your home. This particular installation is of the Spee-D channel drain, but the same steps can be applied to the NDS mini channel drain. This installation involves the forming, pouring and finishing of concrete. If you are not comfortable doing this, we recommend you contact a contractor to help with the installation. Installing the NDS Spee-D channel drain can be a lot of work but will protect your property from future water damage.
